Introduction :
Mobile crane are common lifting machinery used for lifting pipes or others
equipment. Different combinations of boom types and mountings have significant
impact on the safe use of these cranes. However, the fundamental principles of
safety are the same. Generally, there are two basic rules that must follow when
using the cranes. Those are:
1. Having the right crane for the job and
2. Using the crane correctly
Accidents are usually caused by the failure to follow these two rules. Cranes
are massive steel structures that can weigh many tones, depending on the
capacity. Hence the potential for causing damage to life and property in an
accident is very great indeed. Especially if the
cranes are operated close to public areas. It is therefore imperative that the
two rules governing the safe use of the crane are understood and observed.
Lifting requires ropes or slings, which are made from various materials.
Selection of ropes is very critical therefore riggers are trained good enough to
know the right selection of ropes for lifting. Wire ropes can be made of cable
steel wires, synthetic ropes and chain slings. Maintenance or testing of cranes
(either mobile or overhead) and all types of lifting slings and ropes are
compulsory. Check can either be daily, weekly and annually. Rigger should be an
experienced signal man; he is the media between the crane operator and the loads
to be lifted. In handling loads, all safety rules shall be followed explicitly
(clearly). Crane
operators must have enough knowledge to:
• know the crane lifting SWL capacity.
• know the right slings to use (i.e. wire ropes, synthetic rope or chain slings)
• know the rigger's signal
• know how to maintain crane engine and boom, etc
