Civil>Crane>Crane Checking

Routine Checking : Routine checking of cranes before daily use Operators are responsible for conducting a basic check on the machine everyday before they start operation. It is important that the operators accept these checks as an important and integral part of their job which must be done conscientiously.
Outlined below are some simple checks that an operator should do before the start of each
Shift:

1. Clean up the crane and remove any grease or other slippery substance which may
cause him to slip while climbing into the crane's cabin.

2. Do a visual inspection of the crane's superstructure. See that the boom sections
are not twisted, swayed or drooped. Check that there are no obvious defects on the slewing table, derricking jack and chassis.

3. Check that the hooks are not cracked, opened up or deformed and wire ropes are free from kinking, corrosion or fraying. The swivel ball, if fitted, should be able to rotate freely. The winch drums and winches (if accessible) should be free from visible defect.

4. Check the crane's engine for loose beltings, low lubrication and hydraulic oil, cooling water and battery water levels. Top up if necessary.

5. Free all control levers. Starts up the crane and warm it up. Once the engine has been warmed up, put on the outriggers (for truck mounted cranes). Outriggers, when in use, must always be fully extended.

6. Operate the controls to slew, derrick, hoist and telescope the boom. Note any abnormal sound or vibration. The operator should inform his supervisor immediately if he observed any abnormality while
doing the checks. An operator must refrain from repairing the crane himself since he is not qualified to do so. Once the above checks have been done, the crane is ready for use.
