SINGLE STOREY OVERHEAD PLATFORM

Usually erection of scaffolds will be handled by contractor, but it will be an advantage for us to understand the correct methods of erecting scaffolding. Improper erection may result to a serious injury to the workers and damage to the equipment.  A single storey (stage) overhead platform (STIP) is commonly erected with reason for the worker to work on such equipment at height beyond ground reach of between 6 feet to 12
feet. This platform is needed for us to do work or maintenance comfortably.(i.e. Like overhead valves, high switches beside vessels, high pipeline flanges ).

If the equipment is higher then 12 feet, (which is more then twice to the average human height), a multi stage scaffolds need to be raise.

1. Ensure spaces between platform transoms does not exceed the following:
a. 990mm (3 feet) space for 32mm (1.3 inch) board (plank) thickness.
b. 1520mm (5 feet) for 38mm (1.5 inch) board thickness.
c. 2600mm (8.5 feet) for 50mm (2 inch) board thickness.
2. Ensure the gaps between board (planks) do not exceed 25 mm (1 inch).
3. Install Toe board above the planks, basically to prevent tools or materials place on the
planks form dropping to ground.
4. Only select good scaffolding tubes for the structure frame work, discard dented tube.
5. Use swivel or double coupler on the right place.
6. Use Base plate (planks) , to prevent scaffolds footers from sinking or tilting.
7. Diagonal or Transverse or Longitudinal brace are used to strengthen the structure
frame of the scaffolds. Transverse brace is fitted on every lift needed (about 6 feet
ht.)
8. Install ladder to easy access to the platform floor, ladder must be properly secured
vertically along the scaffolds structure and extend at least 1M (3 feet) above the
working platform.
9. Ensure that Guardrail are fitted at height of between 920mm to 1150mm ( 3 to 4 feet).
To protect worker from falling and for the workers to hook their safety harness.
