Crane Procurement :
Procurement of cranes
It is a common practice to have request for cranes passing through several
middlemen before finally reaching the user; sometimes with undesirable
consequences because of
communication breakdown between crane owner and the final user. Hence it is
important that the user states clearly his requirements in writing to avoid any
misunderstanding.
Depending on the agreement between user and supplier, users are generally
responsible for
the operation of the crane. The mechanical soundness of the crane should be the
responsibility of the owner of crane. However, since mechanical soundness will
inevitably affect the crane's capability while in operation, it is important for
the user of the crane to be able to conduct a through check on the crane.
• When selecting a crane for a job, the user should consider the crane's reach
and capacity for the tasks envisaged, with at least 5% margin of safety for the
heaviest and for the furthest load.
• Users will also have
to decide on the type condition, the frequency of lifts at different spots,
availability, etc. Generally it is advisable to use a crawler mounted crane if
it needs to move around the site frequently or where the terrain it is working
on is rough. A truck mounted crane is preferable where lifting is done only at
specific spots because of its need for outriggers.
• Once the type of crane has been decided, the user should spell out details on
crane type, capacity and capabilities to the supplier. The crane requested must
also come with valid and approved inspection certificate. A copy of this
certificate must be supplied with the crane.
• If the crane is supplied with an
operator, the user should ensure that the operator is qualified and has
documentary proof that he has successfully completed and acceptable course on
mobile crane operation.
It must be pointed out that the above applies to users who do not own the
cranes. If the user is
also the owner of the crane, then his responsibilities will include that of the
crane owner's.
