SAINTIS tempatan, Dr Gabriel Walter melakar sejarah dalan dunia saintifik apabila mencipta Transistor Pemancar Cahaya (LET) yang mampu beroperasi pada gelombang 4.3GHz dan 7GHz jika menggunakan Diod Pemancar Cahaya (LED).

Sebelum ini, industri sains mempercayai perkakasan cahaya spontan yang efisien tidak boleh beroperasi pada gelombang melebihi 1GHz namun selepas lima tahun kajian dijalankan, Walter memecahkan teori terbabit.

Beliau yang juga pengasas serta Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Quantum Electro Opto Systems (QEOS) Sdn Bhd, berkata LED QEOS berkelajuan gigabit adalah perkakasan unik kerana kosnya yang rendah untuk dihasilkan serta mudah digunakan seperti didapati pada mentol lampu.

“Tentunya ia akan mencetuskan tekanan pada harga produk berkaitan dalam pasaran elektronik,” katanya yang bekerjasama dengan universiti terkemuka, University of Illinois Urban Champaign (UIUC) bagi penemuan itu.

Katanya, bagi penggunaan gentian optik, LED mampu memberi penjimatan tenaga sebanyak 90 peratus berbanding dengan penyelesaian optikal sedia ada.

“Ketika masyarakat bercakap mengenai penjimatan tenaga dan isu pemanasan global, penemuan ini dilihat penting dalam teknologi alam sekitar dengan menawarkan produk ‘hijau’ yang menawarkan kos berpatutan.

“LED berkelajuan tinggi itu bakal merubah senario biasa yang dilihat pada kabel konvensional pada televisyen dan monitor. Ia bakal merubah segala-galanya,” kata Walter.

Penyelidikan Walter turut terpilih untuk dimuatkan dalam jurnal teknikal yang memiliki edaran paling tinggi di dunia, Applied Physics Letters bagi edisi 15 Jun 2009.

Walter berkata, penerbitan kejayaan LET kelajuan tinggi 4.3 GHz dalam jurnal itu satu pencapaian yang besar kerana perkakasan berkenaan mempunyai kemampuan tambahan untuk menyatukan optoelektronik.

“Seperti juga transistor kepada dunia elektronik, alat ini memberi fungsi yang sama kepada dunia optoelektronik. Potensi aplikasinya tiada batasan,” katanya.

Sekurang-kurangnya empat paten penting difailkan pasukan QEOS-UIUC untuk melindungi penemuan berkenaan.

Berita mengejut yang pasti menghayun perasaan sedih dan hiba bagi peminat penyanyi yang penuh dengan kontroversi ini juga disahkan melalui saluran berita The Associated Press (AP) yang turut melaporkan, kematiannya disebabkan jantung terhenti secara mengejut (cardiac arrest). Meskipun begitu, punca sebenar kematian masih dalam siasatan.

Kronologi awalnya bermula apabila pihak paramedik Jabatan Bomba Los Angeles menerima panggilan kecemasan pada jam 12.30 tengah hari dan ketika itu Michael dikatakan mengalami masalah pernafasan.

Namun setelah diberi rawatan kecemasan (CPR) selama 40 minit, Michael dikejarkan ke hospital Pusat Perubatan UCLA di Los Angeles dan segala usaha bagi menyelamatkannya bertemu jalan buntu apabila Michael disahkan meninggal dunia.

Menurut wakil dari hospital yang memberitahu media antarabangsa, pihaknya mengumpul beberapa doktor berpengalaman, termasuk pakar bedah dan jantung, bagi menyambut Michael sebelum berusaha lebih sejam untuk menyelamatkannya.

Abang kepada penyanyi yang pernah menggegarkan Stadium Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur sekitar 1996 bersempena konsert jelajah Asianya ini, Jermaine, berkata Michael terpaksa dibawa ke hospital dari rumah sewa di Holmby Hills selepas tidak sedarkan diri.

Gelaran penghibur nombor satu dan kesayangan dunia benar-benar terbukti dengan kehadiran ratusan peminat di sekitar hospital sebaik berita mengenainya mula tersebar.

Malah, ibarat sebuah festival anjuran pengikut fanatiknya apabila sekumpulan pengusaha mula menjual kemeja-T dan cenderahati ‘In Loving Memory of Michael Jackson’ selain alunan melodi nyanyian mula kedengaran hasil siulan mereka yang berhimpun.

“Pihak berkuasa akan menjalankan siasatan dan bedah siasat ke atasnya untuk mengetahui punca kematian sebenar. Meskipun begitu, saya tidak menolak kemungkinan ia disebabkan masalah jantung,” katanya.

Lebih menyedihkan dan menjadi kesalan bagi setiap peminat serta kenalan rapatnya apabila harapan pemegang 13 anugerah Grammy ini untuk mengadakan konsert jelajahnya bermula 13 Julai depan bermula di London hanya tinggal kenangan. Michael dan seluruh pengikut muziknya baru saja meraikan sambutan 25 tahun kelahiran album emasnya, Thriller.

Malah segala persediaan dan persiapan menjelang siri jelajahnya mula dilaksanakan memandangkan ia sebuah projek besar yang menjadualkan 50 lokasi persembahan sepanjang siri.

Bekas isterinya yang juga anak tunggal mendiang Elvis Presley, Lisa Marie, tidak mampu memberi sebarang komen mengenai berita yang menyayat hati ini, sebaliknya dia berasa sungguh sedih dan keliru kerana ia berlaku begitu drastik.

Bagaimanapun, teman rapatnya, Uri Geller, memberitahu Press Association, dia percaya antara faktor yang membawa kepada kematian Michael adalah tekanan dialaminya, lebih-lebih lagi menjelang konsertnya di London bulan depan.

“Dia sangat penat dan risau akan persediaan konsertnya dan saya percaya itu penyebab utama yang membunuh penyanyi kesayangan dunia ini.

Michael atau nama sebenarnya, Michael Joseph Jackson dilahirkan pada 29 Ogos 1958 di Gary, Indiana, Amerika Syarikat. Mengimbas pembabitan awalnya sebagai penggiat seni, dia menubuhkan kumpulan Jackson 5 pada 1964 yang juga dianggotai oleh abangnya — Marlon, Tito, Jackie, Jermaine dan adiknya, Randy.

Selepas melahirkan lapan album bersama Jackson 5 bermula Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5 pada 1969, beliau mula mengorak langkahnya sendiri dengan tampil secara solo pada 1972 bersama karya sulungnya, Got To Be There.

Album yang mencatat sejarah dengan jualan lebih 50 juta unit di seluruh dunia ini turut menampilkan lagu hit seperti Beat It dan Billie Jean. Malah, lagu dendangan Michael turut tersenarai di tangga teratas carta lagu seluruh dunia.

Pengaruh muziknya tidak terhenti di situ apabila Michael tampil dengan album Bad pada 1987 diikuti Dangerous (1991) dan Invincible lapan tahun lalu. Setiap albumnya menampilkan identiti dan personaliti sebenarnya. Tidak hairan mengapa pendengar muziknya begitu rapat dan dekat dengan suaranya yang dianggap istimewa itu.

Justeru, sebagai tanda memperingati dan penghormatan kepada permata industri muzik Barat ini, kebanyakan stesen TV dan radio memutarkan lagu dendangannya selain muzik videonya.

Bagaimanapun, di sebalik senyuman dan kejayaan dikecapinya, penyanyi yang dianggap legenda oleh semua penggiat seni antarabangsa ini digelangi seribu masalah dan kontroversi.

Selain masalah rumah tangganya dengan Marie, Michael pernah dihadapkan ke mahkamah atas tuduhan memalukan apabila dia dikaitkan dengan isu pencabulan kanak-kanak, Chandler, 13, pada 1993.

Bagaimanapun, Michael mengambil langkah penyelesaian secara peribadi dengan keluarga remaja itu. Pada 2003, Michael sekali lagi menghadapi tuduhan sama dengan remaja lain tetapi dia dibebaskan atas ketiadaan bukti sahih.

Kontroversi membabitkan penghibur yang pernah memperkenalkan geraknya yang tersendiri, ‘moonwalk’ ke seluruh dunia ini juga berkaitan isu kewangannya yang dikatakan tidak stabil dan kritikal.

Ibarat jatuh ditimpa tangga, Michael disaman oleh anak kepada Raja Bahrain, Sheikh Abdulla Hamad Al Khalifa sebanyak AS$7 juta berkaitan isu perjanjian penerbitan buku dan album baru.

Kehilangan Michael pasti meninggalkan impak yang sangat kuat kepada industri hiburan baik tempatan mahupun di persada antarabangsa kerana bakat serta pencapaiannya bukan calang-calang.

Peminatnya di seluruh dunia, sahabat handai, kaum keluarga serta kebanyakan penggiat seni meratapi pemergian mengejutnya.

reported that “music could be used to treat heart attack and stroke victims.” The newspaper says that researchers have found that “music with faster tempos increased blood pressure and heart rate, whereas slower music reduced them.” If the music stopped, blood pressure, heart rate and breathing were also reduced.

These findings come from a study that monitored heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and blood flow while participants listened to five different operatic or classical pieces.

This relatively small study has shown that the body experiences short-term physiological changes in response to classical music. However, all of the participants tested were young, healthy adults. While these results are interesting, they may not apply to people of different ages or who are less healthy. In particular, this study cannot tell us whether listening to music would have the same physiological effect, or any long-term beneficial effects, in people with heart conditions or vascular problems, such as stroke.

Where did the story come from?

Dr Luciano Bernardi and colleagues from Pavia University and the University of Milan-Bicocca in Italy, and the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford carried out this research. The study was funded by the Signe and Ane Gyllenberg Foundation in Finland and published in the peer-reviewed medical journal Circulation.

What kind of scientific study was this?

This was an experimental study in humans, which looked at the effects of music on short-term physiological measures, such as breathing and heart rate.

The authors of this study say that music is increasingly being used to treat various conditions, and that musical treatments could be standardised if all individuals respond to music in the same way. The researchers were particularly interested to find out if physiological responses were dependent on whether or not a person had musical training.

The researchers enrolled 24 healthy white adults with an average age 25. Twelve of the participants had been choristers for at least three years and 12 had no previous music training.

The study was designed to explore whether variable musical emphasis, such as crescendo (getting louder) or a more stable emphasis, could produce the same heart and breathing changes in the two groups or whether responses were influenced by musical training.

Participants were asked to lie down, close their eyes and use headphones to listen to a playlist of five different passages of music and one two-minute silent track in random order. The researchers monitored the participants’ heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate, blood flow in the skin and blood flow to the brain before and during six different listening pieces:

* Adagio from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony (a well-known orchestral piece).
* ‘Nessun dorma’ from Puccini’s Turandot (an emotional and lyrical operatic aria).
* Cantata BWV 169a: ‘Gott soll allein mein Herze haben’ by Bach (reported to be a more “intellectual” piece of solo singing ).
* Two arias by Verdi with rhythmic phrases: ‘Va pensiero’ from Nabucco and the drinking song ‘Libiam Ne’ieti Calici’ from La Traviata.

After listening to the music, the participants’ were asked if they experienced any strong emotional responses to each piece (for example, chills), and rated the pleasantness of each piece, how new it was to them and the intensity of their emotion on a scale from one (very low) to five (very high). The researchers looked at whether participants’ physiological measurements (blood pressure, heart rate etc) responded differently to the different pieces of music.

What were the results of the study?

The participants reported no strong preferences for any of the pieces played. Most people reported that their listening session made them experience “no particular emotions” or made them “calm”, with none reporting that the music gave them “chills” or other strong responses.

The researchers found that:

* Both orchestral and vocal crescendos in the music led to changes in cardiovascular and breathing patterns, in particular constriction (narrowing) of blood vessels in the skin and increases in blood pressure and heart rate.
* Music with a uniform tempo led to dilation (widening) of the blood vessels in the skin and reduction in blood pressure.
* Silence led to relaxation, illustrated by a reduction in heart rate and other physiological variables.
* Each different piece of music produced its own effect on physiological measures, with ‘Nessun dorma’ showing the most consistent effects.

Overall, similar responses were seen in both the choristers and the group with no musical experience.

What interpretations did the researchers draw from these results?

The researchers concluded that people show consistent physiological responses to music, and these changes might contribute to emotions experienced when listening to music.

They say their findings “have considerable implications for the use of music as a therapeutic tool, because all subjects, whether musically trained or not, responded in a similar manner”.

What does the NHS Knowledge Service make of this study?

This relatively small study has found that the body experiences short-term physiological changes in response to different music.

While media coverage of this study has generally focused on music’s potential for treating heart or vascular conditions such as stroke, the study only tested responses in young, healthy adults. Since the results of this study may not apply to people of different ages or who are less healthy, it cannot confirm whether listening to music would have the same effect in, or be beneficial to, older people with cardiovascular conditions.

This study was interested in looking only at short-term physiological effects of music and did not investigate whether these changes can lead to long-term improvements in health. Researchers who studied tens of thousands of Britons over more than a decade found that vegetarians were 12 per cent less likely to contract cancer than their meat eating counterparts.

With a third of the population developing cancer in their lifetime, changing diets could result in more than two million people avoiding the disease altogether, said the researchers.

For some cancers like leukaemia, stomach and bladder cancers the difference was even more striking with up to 45 per cent fewer non-meat eaters contracting the diseases than carnivores.

Dr Naomi Allen, an epidemiologist at Oxford University and co-author of the study, said: “This is strong evidence that vegetarians have lower rates of cancer than meat eaters.”

Although it is widely recommended people eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day to reduce their risk of cancer and other diseases, there is very little evidence looking specifically at a vegetarian diet.

The study, published in the British Journal of Cancer, is one of the findings from the European Perspective Investment into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) which is following half a million people.

More than 61,000 people aged between 20 and 89, roughly half of whom were vegetarian, were followed for more than 12 years in the British arm of the research which is supported by Cancer Research UK.

During the time 3,350 people contracted 20 different cancers and the team compared the rates of meat eaters, fish eaters and vegetarians. All the results were adjusted to take into account smoking, obesity, alcohol intake and lifestyle.

While common cancers such as prostate and breast cancer showed little difference, the overall cancer rates were different as were those for blood, stomach and bladder cancers.

Fish eaters actually had the lowest rate of cancer – 18 per cent lower than meat eaters – but they were also the smallest sample.

Sara Hiom, Cancer Research UK’s director of health information, said: “These interesting results add to the evidence that what we eat affects our chances of developing cancer.

“We know that eating a lot of red and processed meat increases the risk of stomach cancer. But the links between diet and cancer risk are complex and more research is needed to see how big a part diet plays and which specific dietary factors are most important.

“The relatively low number of vegetarians who developed cancer in this study supports Cancer Research UK’s advice that people should eat a healthy, balanced diet high in fibre, fruit and vegetables and low in saturated fat, salt and red and processed meat.”

Su Taylor, of The Vegetarian Society, said: “That is why we need more research along these lines to find out exactly what is going on. We are not saying vegetarianism is the panacea for all ill health but it certainly helps protect against a number of diseases.”

“Being married protects you against Alzheimer’s in later life,” the Daily Mail reported. The newspaper said that researchers found that people who have a partner in middle age have half the risk of developing dementia compared to those who live alone. However, getting divorced or becoming widowed in middle age triples the risk of dementia.

It has often been suggested that marital status has an impact on health and quality of life. This study assessed the relationship between marital status in 2,000 middle-aged people (average age 50) and their cognitive impairment about 21 years later. It found that the risk of any cognitive impairment almost doubled if a person was alone in middle age compared to having a partner. Being without a partner in both middle age and later life further increased risk.

Cognitive function was not measured at the start of the study, so it is difficult to prove that marital status is related to cognitive impairment in later life. If the association does exist, the reasons behind it are difficult to establish. The risk of dementia is likely to be governed by a complex interaction of several factors, such as lifetime personal, social and intellectual interactions, health, lifestyle and medical and genetic factors.

Where did the story come from?

The research was carried out by Krister Håkansson from the Department of Psychology at Växjö University, Sweden, and colleagues from other institutions in Sweden and Finland.

The study was funded by Kuopio University Hospital, the Academy of Finland, a grant from the EU, the Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Research, the Finnish Cultural Foundation, the Foundation of Juho Vainio, the Gamla Tjänarinnor Foundation, the Helsingin Sanomain 100-vuotissäätiö and the Gun and Bertil Stohne Foundation.

The study was published in the peer-reviewed British Medical Journal.

What kind of scientific study was this?

This cohort study assessed whether being married in middle age is related to cognitive function in later life. It used participants from a previous study called the cardiovascular risk factors, aging and dementia (CAIDE) study. These people were recruited from four separate population samples in 1972, 1977, 1982 and 1987. The four samples were randomly selected from the population register of the Kuopio and Joensuu regions of eastern Finland and consisted of 30,078 adults aged 30 to 59 (average age 50.4 years). The sample was stratified so that there were at least 250 participants from each sex and from each of three 10-year age intervals. In 1998, 2,000 surviving members of this cohort were randomly selected to be interviewed again, 1,449 of whom (73%) chose to participate. By this time, they were aged between 65 and 70 and the average follow-up time was 20.9 years.

At the beginning of the study and then at follow-up, the researchers assessed the participants’ marital status and categorised them as single, married/cohabiting, divorced or widowed. They combined data on marital status at the two time points to create different categories of marital transition, for example whether participants were married at both times or married then widowed.

At follow-up, cognitive impairment was assessed using the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) for screening. The results of this were then used to decide whether further clinical examination and diagnostic testing (including brain imaging) were needed. Dementia was diagnosed using valid diagnostic criteria and defined as either mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. The researchers also used laboratory methods to investigate whether participants were carriers of the apolipoprotein E e4 allele (considered to be a risk factor for Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia). For the 551 selected participants who chose not to take part in the 1998 assessments, information on diagnoses of dementia was obtained from local hospitals and healthcare centres.

In their analyses, the researchers collapsed the middle-age marital status categories into the following: living with a partner/married, single, separated/divorced, or widowed. They combined marital status in middle-age and later life to give the following categories of marital transition: cohabiting with a partner on both occasions, cohabiting with a partner in middle age but not in later life, and living without a partner on both occasions. (The researchers said there were too few people were single in middle age but cohabiting in later life to be included in the analyses).

They assessed the relationship between marital status and cognitive impairment in later life, taking into account (adjusting for) other possible risk factors (assessed in middle age) of apolipoprotein E e4 allele status, education and occupation, sex and age, smoking, BMI, blood pressure, cholesterol, physical activity and depression.

What were the results of the study?

In the 1998 assessment, 294 of the 1,449 participants scored 24 or less on the MMSE (i.e. the cut-off below which they considered there to be evidence of cognitive impairment). Through further assessment and diagnostic testing, 82 were diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment, 48 with Alzheimer’s (or 52 if different diagnostic criteria were used) and nine with other types of dementia. When data from the hospital records of the 551 people who did not participate in the later assessment were included, overall 113 people were considered to have dementia (76 of whom had Alzheimer’s) and 1,887 were considered to be without dementia.

People without a partner (single/separated or widowed) in middle age were twice as likely to demonstrate cognitive impairment in later life compared to those who had a partner. When the researchers looked at the separate categories, they found that people who were widowed at middle age had more than twice the risk of any cognitive impairment, but the risk for those who were single/separated was not significant.

Those who were single/separated or widowed in middle age and were still in the same category at follow-up had almost three times the risk of cognitive impairment compared with married/cohabiting people.

Those who were widowed at both time points had seven times the risk of Alzheimer’s disease compared to married/cohabiting people (odds ratio 7.67, 95% confidence interval 1.6 to 40.0). The presence of the apolipoprotein E e4 allele further increased the risk of Alzheimer’s disease in people who were widowed at both time points.

What interpretations did the researchers draw from these results?

The authors concluded that living with a partner may have a protective effect against the development of cognitive impairment in later life. They say that social and genetic factors may explain the large increase in risk of Alzheimer’s disease for widowed people who are apolipoprotein E e4 carriers. They note that the increased risk among widowed people compared with single people indicates that social and other factors may be involved.

* The marital status categories used in the study may have meant some relationships were misclassified. Personal relationships are not always easy to group according to a simple convention of married/cohabiting, single/separated or widowed. In addition, such categorisation is unable to take into account all the complexities and detail of the individuals’ situations, such as how long a relationship lasted, whether it was amicable and whether the person had a close, supporting network of family and friends.

The reasons behind the possible associations are not clear. The authors suggest a “brain reserve hypothesis”, the idea that various forms of social and intellectual interaction are protective against dementia. They discuss this theory in some depth. However, it is likely to be a complex relationship between several factors, such as personal, social and intellectual interactions and health, lifestyle, medical and genetic factors, that affect the risk of dementia.

Presiden Pas, Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, berkata keputusan Dewan Pemuda parti itu menjemput Pemuda Umno untuk mengadakan wacana ilmiah berhubung isu semasa tidak bercanggah dengan pendirian Pas.

Beliau yang juga Ahli Parlimen Marang, berkata Pas membenarkan perbincangan secara ilmiah diadakan dengan mana-mana pihak, termasuk Umno bagi menyelesaikan masalah yang ada.

“Ia sesuatu yang baik dan tidak bercanggah dengan pendirian parti,” katanya ketika ditemui pemberita di lobi Parlimen, semalam.

Kelmarin, Ketua Dewan Pemuda Pas, Nasrudin Hassan, menyerahkan surat jemputan wacana itu kepada Naib Ketua Pemuda Umno, Datuk Razali Ibrahim dan pelawaan itu disambut baik pergerakan berkenaan.

Tindakan Dewan Pemuda Pas itu bagaimanapun dibantah Ketua Pemuda Sosialis DAP, Anthony Loke, kerana ia boleh menimbulkan kekeliruan di kalangan penyokong pembangkang.

Abdul Hadi berkata, Pas tetap mahu mengukuhkan kerjasama dalam Pakatan Rakyat, tetapi dalam masa yang sama membenarkan perbincangan diadakan dengan mana-mana pihak termasuk Umno dan Barisan Nasional (BN).

Naib Presiden Pas, Salahuddin Ayub, pula berkata Pakatan Rakyat sentiasa sedia untuk membincangkan isu membabitkan kepentingan negara, termasuk pemulihan ekonomi, pendidikan dan sosial pada bila-bila masa saja.

Ketua Pembangkang, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, bagaimanapun menyerahkan kepada kepemimpinan tertinggi Pas berhubung perkara itu.

“Saya mendapat tafsiran dan penjelasan yang berbeza terhadap perkara itu. Terserah kepada mereka sama ada mahu meneruskan perbincangan itu dengan tajuk yang difikirkan sesuai,” katanya.

Sementara itu, Ahli Parlimen Kulim Bandar Bharu dari Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), Zulkifli Nordin, berkata perbincangan atau wacana ilmiah antara Pemuda Pas dan Umno itu adalah langkah baik bagi kepentingan bangsa dan agama.

“Wacana ini sekurang-kurangnya dapat menyelesaikan masalah umat Islam,” katanya.

Mengenai bantahan Pemuda Sosialis DAP terhadap perbincangan itu, Zulkifli berkata, pendirian DAP itu memang dijangka kerana parti berkenaan bersifat sekular.

“Mereka (DAP) tidak boleh melihat orang Melayu beragama Islam duduk semeja kerana ia tidak membawa sebarang kebaikan kepada mereka. Perkara itu tidak menggembirakan mereka,” katanya.

Bursa Malaysia ended lower Friday on profit-taking on selected heavyweights and lower-liners ahead of the introduction of FTSE Bursa Malaysia Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (FBM KLCI) next week, dealers said.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) fell 6.02 points, or 0.558 percent, to close at 1,072.69, dragged down by losses mostly in IJM Corp and Hong Leong Bank.

Dealers said gains in Tenaga Nasional, however, managed to cap some of the losses.

The KLCI, which opened 8.46 points lower at 1,070.25, moved between 1,067.84 and 1,077.43 throughout the day.

The Plantation Index declined 31.78 points to 5,375.84, the Finance Index lost 46 points to 8,542.12 and the Industrial Index was 13.43 points lower at 2,375.51.

The FBMEmas Index decreased 13.86 points to 7,208.01 and the FBMMesdaq Index slipped 22.67 points to 3,976.31.

The FBM2BRD Index rose 35.32 points to 4,725.07 and the FBM30 Index increased 12.7 points to 6,987.67

Gainers led losers by 284 to 280 while 207 counters were unchanged, 455 untraded and 34 suspended.

With the introduction of FBM KLCI, the current FTSE Bursa Malaysia Large 30 Index would be retired.

Financial products using the FTSE Bursa Malaysia Large 30 Index and KLCI, FBM30etf, KLCI Futures and KLCI Options, would adopt FBM KLCI as its underlying index.

Meanwhile, FTSE Bursa Malaysia 100 Index would be renamed FTSE Bursa Malaysia Top 100.

A dealer said instead of tracking 100 stocks, the FBM KLCI would be made up of the 30 largest listed companies by market value, with at least a 15 percent free float.

He said profit-taking was seen in counters that would not be in the FBM KLCI list on Monday.

IJM Corp lost 50 sen to RM5.30 and Hong Leong Bank shed 25 sen to RM5.40.

Among the actives, Talam Corp-RCPS fell 1.5 sen to 6.5 sen, Talam Corp eased one sen to 9.5 sen and KNM Group added 1.5 sen to 79 sen.

In heavyweights, Sime Darby was unchanged at RM7.25, Maybank added five sen to RM5.75, Bumiputra-Commerce eased five sen to RM9.50 and Tenaga gained 15 sen to RM7.75.

Total volume rose to 1.097 billion shares worth RM983.826 million from 906.716 million shares worth RM1.158 billion on Thursday.

The Main Board volume rose to 991.288 million shares valued at RM956.462 million from 803.259 million shares valued at RM1.129 billion yesterday.

Turnover on the Second Board increased to 56.459 million units worth RM17.432 million from 52.452 million units worth RM17.781 million previously.

Mesdaq volume eased to 28.261 million shares valued at RM4.574 million from 28.62 milliom units valued at RM4.427 on Thursday.

Warrants improved to 14.846 million units worth RM2.663 million from 12.748 million units worth RM2.144 million previously.

On a sectoral basis, consumer products accounted for 23.179 million shares traded on the Main Board, industrial products 138.601 million, construction 43.702 million, trade/services 275.442 million, technology 7.407 million, infrastructure 35.426 million, finance 38.37 million, hotels 1.723 million, properties 406.511 million, plantations 17.713 million, mining nil, REITs 3.319 million and closed/fund 75,400

Michael Owen will sign for Manchester United on a free transfer today provided that he passes a stringent medical at Old Trafford.

The move would represent an astonishing turnaround in fortunes for the striker, who was relegated with Newcastle United only six weeks ago. On top of the prospect of winning medals with the Barclays Premier League champions, the chance to pair up with Wayne Rooney will give Owen hope that he can revive his England career.

He has been exiled by Fabio Capello, but England are short of proven strikers with the World Cup finals less than 12 months away and Owen could force his way back into the reckoning if he succeeds at United.

Owen, 29, joined the ranks of the unemployed on Wednesday, when his contract at Newcastle expired, and his agents had been so concerned about a lack of interest that they sent a brochure to Premier League managers setting out his strengths.

Liverpool, his former club, were among those who showed no desire to sign him, and only 48 hours ago Sam Allardyce said that a deal would be too risky for Blackburn Rovers because of Owen’s injury record.

But Sir Alex Ferguson has decided that with Owen a free agent, it is a gamble worth taking. The United manager is hopeful that his big-match temperament will yield a glut of goals, while Owen will be thrilled after four nightmare years at St James’ Park.

The deal will require Owen to accept a huge drop in salary from the £120,000 a week he was earning on Tyneside. Everton, who made an offer this week, had been willing to pay a basic salary of about £50,000 a week.

The scale of the United deal is not yet clear in terms of length of contract or salary, but United are understood to have included incentives depending on games played, goals scored and trophies won.

First Owen will have to convince the doctors that he is fully fit. He has not suffered a bad injury since snapping his cruciate ligament at the 2006 World Cup finals, which ruled him out almost for an entire season, but there have been a number of niggles and he has lost his once extreme pace.

Ferguson’s interest in Owen is longstanding. He considered buying him when he left Real Madrid for Newcastle in 2005, but he already had Rooney and Ruud van Nistelrooy and was not willing to match Newcastle’s £16.5 million offer. United were considering a £12 million bid the next summer before Owen suffered the injury to his right knee in Germany.

United need attacking options. Cristiano Ronaldo has been sold to Real Madrid for £80 million, Carlos Tévez has departed, seemingly for Manchester City, and Ferguson lost out this week on Karim Benzema, who is bound for the Bernabéu from Lyons.

The intriguing question for United fans is whether Dimitar Berbatov, such a disappointment last season, would lose his place to a Rooney-Owen partnership. Capello, too, will watch with interest. Owen has played only once for the Italian, in a friendly against France in March last year, and the England manager has been sparing in his praise.

Owen, however, will be a lot more optimistic about adding to his 40 goals and 89 caps if he is modelling a United shirt by tonight.

If United’s move for Owen was a shock, Manchester City’s latest attempt to lure John Terry from Stamford Bridge was more predictable. Chelsea confirmed last night that they had rejected a second offer for the England captain, thought to be less than £30 million, after turning down a similar approach last season.
