Updated version of the sprightly hatchback, with three-door cars staring from £7,749 and five-doors from £8,249. Although it looks like a facelift, with a new grille and restyled bumpers front and rear, Mitsubishi says there’s only 35 per cent of parts carry-over from the previous model.

A redesigned interior provides increased cargo capacity, while there’s a new steering wheel, a digital information display, new dark and silver finishes and a revised audio system. The sliding rear seat is retained from the previous model.

The 1.1-litre engine develops 74bhp and 74lb ft of torque, with 0-62mph in 12.8sec, and EU Combined fuel consumption of 51.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 130g/km. Equivalent figures for the 1.3 are 94bhp, 92lb ft, 11sec, 48.7mpg and 138g/km.

A six-speed Allshift automated manual transmission is a £500 is available with the 1.3-litre engine and CZ2 trim. While its 0-62mph time is 0.8sec slower, it has an EU Combined economy of 50.4mpg and CO2 reduced to 133g/km.

A high-performance Ralliart version, powered by a 147bhp, turbocharged 1.5-litre engine and with stiffened suspension, arrives next year and will cost £11,999 for the three-door and £12,499 for the five-door.

We like: Value for money, stylish, sporty looks, strong driver appeal.

We don’t like: Road noise and occasional mild harshness. A-pillars restrict vision (but no worse than average).
