POLICE have appealed to the public to help catch a gang of youths who are being hunted over the brutal pack rape of two schoolgirls.
Up to eight men and teenagers took part in the attack on two 15-year-old girls in a park in Melbourne’s north.
Police suspect the group planned the shocking sexual assault in Roxburgh Park, the Herald Sun reports.
The girls were lured by two youths to a well-lit park where they were confronted by at least six others and repeatedly raped.
Police released CCTV images of youths they want to speak to over the attack.
And they appealed to members of the public to help catch the monsters responsible before they attack again.
Det Insp Glenn Davies, of the sexual crimes squad, said the horrific attack highlighted a surge in reports of young men sexually assaulting girls.
“This is a shocking situation where two minors have been attacked,” he said.
“The girls were calling out to each other from either side of the park. Those calls were heard by witnesses.”
The schoolgirls have told police that members of the gang followed them from Broadmeadows railway station about 9pm on October 24 and on to a bus.
They then followed them into a McDonald’s restaurant in Roxburgh Park, where two of the youths police want to identify lured them to a nearby park about 10.30pm.
At the park they were confronted by at least six other youths. The girls, feeling intimidated, drank alcohol with the group unaware of what was about to happen.
They were separated and dragged to either end of the well-lit park at the intersection of Murchison and McKinley drives, police say.
They shouted and screamed during the horrific ordeal, but the culprits escaped.
Det Insp Davies said: “It seemed as if the victims were lured to the park and others were waiting and knew what was going to happen.”
He said the culprits were not alarmed that passers-by might hear the victims yelling.
“They are extremely distressed about the incident,” Det Insp Davies said.
“It wasn’t particularly late at night when it occurred. The girls are friends who had caught up that night.”
The attack follows several sex assault investigations that have shocked the community, including a 2006 attack recorded and sold on DVD.
It depicted the assault of a 17-year-old who was taken from Werribee railway station to the banks of a nearby creek.
Last month, a youth and two 18-year-olds were charged after an alleged gang rape of a woman in Phillip Island on a footy trip.
Two women told police they were raped, but one has withdrawn her complaint.
The youths allegedly barricaded the women in separate rooms. Police allege the women were forced to have sex with many men.
Det Insp Davies appealed to family members and others who may know those pictured over the latest attack to call police.
“It’s a very serious offence against young people who are vulnerable,” he said.
“The behaviour of these young men is entirely unacceptable. Young men must realise there are consequences for this type of behaviour.”
He said police were concerned about sex assaults involving numbers of young men attacking vulnerable females
