LG Display, the second-largest liquid-crystal display maker in the world, has developed the world’s thinnest LCD TV panel, according to the company yesterday.
The new panel has a thickness of just 2.6 millimeters (0.1 inch), surpassing the record set by Samsung Electronics in October this year of 3.9 millimeters. That TV itself displaced a display LG put together in May that measured 5.9 millimeters thick.
The new television itself is 106.7 centimeters wide.
“By developing the world’s thinnest LCD TV panel, measuring 2.6 millimeters thick, LG Display has proved its capability to lead the current trends toward high resolution and slim design,” said Chung In-jae, the chief technology officer and executive vice president of LG Display.
The company said that the new panel will work ideally with wall-mounted TV sets, weighing just 4 kilograms (8.8 pounds). The 42-inch panel also features full HD resolution using 120 hertz technology, making images clearer. LG added that the panel’s lightweight and ultra-slim design had been made possible due to their use of a special light-emitting diode backlighting system and optical film technology.
LG Display said that it would showcase the new product during the next Consumer Electronics Show to be held in Las Vegas in the United States from Jan. 6 to 9.
“Today, LG Display’s stock is 33 percent higher than it was in early November, and with increased demand for LCD and LED panels, this is expected to continue until February at least,” said Ahn Seong-ho, a researcher at Eugene Securities Co.
The stock price of LG Display rose 2.4 percent yesterday on the benchmark Kospi index to close at 38,200 won ($32).
