For many, it’s easy to gag over Lady Gaga, but it’s best to resist. Stefani Germanotta has too many fans going “gaga” to say with certainty she will flame out anytime soon. A good number of them are in Calgary, and they’re upset because their glam rock queen bypassed this city during her recent tour. She did perform two shows in Edmonton.
Who cares, you say?
That answer depends on who you ask. To some, she’s a bad Madonna knock-off, except the Material Girl did it first, and did it better. To others, she’s a brilliant performing artist who is a cross between David Bowie and Madonna, and who represents a new movement in pop culture.
Time has proven Madonna to be a self-made cultural icon with staying power, despite the initial cynics. Much of what was said about Madonna in the early days is now being said about Gaga. Mind you, there’s no way Gaga can be the fashion queen that Madonna was in the ’80s, as today’s tweens and teens are unlikely to easily copy Gaga’s elaborate and flamboyant costumes. Still, we will resist the urge to speculate that Lady Gaga is simply a gimmick who will soon be passe. It’s simply too early to tell. Thus, we reserve the right to gag ourselves in making what could someday prove to be a prediction as outlandish as the diva herself.
