Introduction
To Thermocouples
A thermocouple is a sensor that measures temperature. It consists of two
different types of metals, joined together at one end. When the junction
of the two metals is heated or cooled, a voltage is created that can be
correlated back to the temperature. Thermocouples are normally made from
special thermocouple alloy wire that is joined at one end by a weld or
some other mechanical connection.
In electronics, thermocouples are a widely
used type of temperature sensor and can also be used as a means to
convert thermal potential difference into electric potential difference.
They are cheap, interchangeable, have standard connectors, and can
measure a wide range of temperatures. The main limitation is accuracy;
system errors of less than 1 °C can be difficult to achieve.
Thermocouples are available in different
combinations of metals or calibrations. The most common calibrations are
J, K, T and E. There are also other calibrations such as R, S, C, G and
B used for ultra high temperatures. Each calibration has a different
temperature range, accuracy and environmental considerations. Although
the maximum temperature range is dependent on the thermocouple
calibration, the diameter of the wire also affects the temperature
range. That is, a very thin thermocouple may not reach the full
thermocouple temperature range.
